A cracked molar at work on Garrett Road. A teenager’s tooth knocked loose at practice on the field behind the high school. Swelling that appeared yesterday and is spreading toward your jaw. When dental emergencies happen in Upper Darby, Springfield, Lansdowne, or anywhere along the West Chester Pike corridor, you need a dentist who can do more than hand you a prescription and tell you to schedule something next week.
What Qualifies as a Real Emergency
True dental emergencies are situations where waiting changes the outcome. A knocked-out permanent tooth has about a 30-minute window for reimplantation to have the best chance of success. Uncontrolled oral bleeding needs evaluation. Facial swelling that’s progressing, particularly with fever, can signal an abscess requiring drainage. A fractured tooth with exposed nerve tissue causes severe, unrelenting pain. These situations need a dental chair, not an emergency room.
The ER can manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but they can’t reimplant a tooth, drain an abscess properly, do an emergency root canal, or extract a tooth that’s beyond saving. That’s dental-specific care, and it’s what our West Chester Pike office is set up to provide same-day.
What to Do Right Now
Knocked-out tooth: pick up by the crown only, rinse gently if dirty, try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, submerge it in milk or tuck it between your cheek and gum. Then call us immediately.
For fractures and cracks: warm water rinse, cold compress on the outside of the cheek, avoid biting on that side.
For swelling: cold compress only, 15 minutes on and off. Never apply heat to a dental infection. If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, head to the ER — that’s a medical emergency, not a dental one.
Why Our Office on West Chester Pike
We keep same-day emergency slots open every day because we’ve seen what happens when patients have to wait. A crack that could have been saved with a crown turns into an extraction. An abscess that needed drainage becomes a hospital admission. Our Upper Darby office at 9027 West Chester Pike is equipped with digital panoramic imaging, in-house endodontics for emergency root canals, full oral surgery capability, and a range of restorative materials for temporary and permanent repairs.
We’re centrally located for patients from Springfield (just down West Chester Pike), Lansdowne, Drexel Hill, Clifton Heights, and Garrettford. On-site parking, direct access from Route 1, and easy reach from Garrett Road and MacDade Boulevard.
After the Emergency
Emergency treatment stops the crisis. The follow-up plan depends on what happened. A temporary filling needs a permanent restoration. An extraction leads to a conversation about replacement options — implants, bridges, or partial dentures. If the emergency was your first visit to our practice, we’d welcome the chance to build a relationship beyond the urgent moment. But there’s no pressure. You set the pace.
